On the first day, Miki Montlló will make a presentation, where he will talk about his experiences in the worlds of advertising, comics and animation. Then, as a masterclass, there will be an explanation of the method used to apply color to your illustrations, where we will see the process developed step by step. Finally, he will make a practical demonstration, and start working on the illustration he will paint throughout the workshop. Over the next two days, explanations about the theory of light and color will alternate with the work that students will be doing in their own illustrations. Each student will create a design and illustration with the technique described during the class. It will be required to bring a previously drawn illustration to the workshop, in order to concentrate fully on coloring it. During the workshop, the following concepts will be explained:

Day 1 -
  • Basic geometry applied to color theory.
  • Value, contrast and saturation.
  • Color pads.
  • Types of light applied to objects. COLD / WARM contrast.
  • Different materials and their interaction with light.
Day 2 -
  • Working on a color sketch.
  • Finding references.
  • Learn the tools.
  • Applying and understanding references.
  • Composing an image.
  • The "golden ratio" and the rule of thirds.
  • Using positive and negative space.
  • Building and blocking shapes.
  • Inking in Clip Studio Paint.
Day 3 -
  • Painting an illustration.
  • Rendering techniques.
  • Brushes and strokes.
  • Mixed Media: using textures.
  • Recording and editing your processes.
  • Promoting your work on social media.
We will also talk about the daily life of the illustrator and cartoonist, how to deal with the day-to-day work, and the reality of the industry in Spain. Finally, a portfolio review will be carried out for each of the students who would like a review during the workshop. In this way, he will give professional guidelines and advice on how to manage your work and create appropriate presentations of your proposals.

Miki Montlló
Miki Montlló is a cartoonist born in Barcelona. His professional career has been very diverse. He studied at Encola de Joso comic, and his first great work was at age of 20 on the cult work of Spanish animation, Nocturna, where he spent a year and a half. Later, he also worked for large Spanish advertising agencies, working for brands such as Ikea, Pascual, Evax, Audi, Bimbo, Brugal, Nokia, Vodafone, Chesterfield, among others. He also worked in the videogame and animation industry, both national and foreign, collaborating with Pendulum Studios, Revolution Software (creators of the legendary Broken Sword saga), Laika (with several Oscar nominations) or CartoonSaloon (Breadwinner, nominated for the Oscars for best animated film of 2018). In addition, he collaborated in live action films such as A Magic Tale, The Impossible or a A Monster Calls, all directed by J. Bayona.

In 2011, he made the leap to the Franco-Belgian comic industry, his childhood dream, and began working on his own series, entitled WARSHIP JOLLY ROGER (Dargaud). The four books of the saga have already been published in various languages. He is currently working on a long comic project for the emerging Chinese market, which will be published globally in 2020, while combining his professional work with teaching (Escola Joso, CG Masters Academy) and his work in video games, board games and advertising.
The course is aimed at anyone who wants to learn about the color methods used by Montlló in his work: recognizing the basic tools, going from basic to advanced theory, and applying these techniques to any field of work related to drawing: comics, illustration, storyboards, etc.
For this course you will need a laptop (mac / pc / ipad) with Photoshop or Clip Studio installed.
