This is a record sleeve design workshop. Students will combine hand drawn lettering and character illustration to create a cohesive themed design using a limited palette of colours using traditional media. Steve will begin by giving a presentation on his working methods, projects and insights into how he developed his renowned style. The final and colour designs will be adaptes to actual 7” records/sleeves. This will be a fun and insightful workshop for anyone who is interested in taking their illustration skills to the next level.

With over 30+ years experience, Steve Simpson is renowned for his hand lettered packaging design, whimsical characters and illustrated barcodes. His distinctive style, inspired by the arts & crafts movement, 50s advertising and folk art, has appeared on everything from a 1" postage stamp to a 200ft screen in Times Square. His work has adorned whiskey bottles and cough bottles, boardgames and board rooms, hot sauces and ceramic saucers:)Since 2008 steve has won over 50 awards for both packaging design and illustration including Gold awards from the Association of Illustrators, Illustrators Guild of Ireland, the IDI and ICAD.
He's been an awards judge for Adobe, 3x3 and the Hong Kong Society of Illustrators and is also a founding member of the Illustrators Guild of Ireland and OFFSKETCH.

Steve has been a main stage speaker at OFFSET, OFFF and ICON as well as giving many talks and workshops across the globe.

Originally from Manchester, UK, Steve has lived in Dublin, Ireland for the past 30 years.

WHO IS THE WORKSHOP AIMED AT?
Course is directed at anyone interested in pushing their illustration skills to the next level. Be that students, illustrators already working in the industry or graphic designers wanting to expand their skillset.
NEEDED MATERIAL

  • scissors/scalpel

  • sketchbook for roughing out ideas

  • ruler

  • glue stick

  • pencils and colouring materials (watercolours or markers)

  • laptop/ipad or smartphone for accessing search engine for reference material (not for creating artwork - non digital workshop)

  • a couple of sheets of A3 heavy smooth cartridge paper for the final design
